Eligibility Criteria For Union Public Service Commission:

  • A candidate must hold a Graduate degree from any of the Universities incorporated by an Act of the central or State Legislature in India or from any other educational institution.

Age Limit  & Relaxation:

  • A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years on the 1st of August, 2026 i.e., the candidate must have been born not earlier than 2nd August, 1994 and not later than 1st August, 2005

Relaxation:-

  • Candidate belongs to a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe: 5 years.
  • Candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes who are eligible to avail of reservation applicable to such candidate: 3 years.
  • Defence Services Personnel, disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof: 03 Years
  • ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and Emergency Commissioned Officers (ECOs)/ Short Service Commissioned Officers (SSCOs) who have rendered at least five years Military Service as on 1st August, 2026 and have been released: 05 Years

UPSC CSE Selection Process:

The CSE comprises two successive stages:

  • Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination (Objective Type) for the selection of candidates for Civil Services (Main) Examination; and
  • Civil Services (Main) Examination (Written and Interview/Personality Test) for the selection of candidates for the various Services and posts.
  • Interview/Personality Test

Civil Services Prelims Exam Pattern – Key Points

  • The Civil Services Preliminary Exam has 2 objective-type (MCQ) papers.
  • The total marks for the Prelims exam are 400 marks.
  • This exam is only a screening test.
  • The marks scored in Prelims are not added to the final merit list.
  • Only candidates who qualify for the Prelims can appear for the Main Exam.
  • About 12 to 13 times the number of available vacancies are selected for the Main Exam.
  • Selection for the Main Exam depends on Prelims qualification and eligibility.

Note:-

1. Qualification for Mains

  • Candidates must score at least 33% in General Studies Paper-II.
  • Selection is based on total marks of General Studies Paper-I as decided by the Commission.

2. Negative Marking Rules

  • Each wrong answer: (0.33) marks deducted.
  • More than one answer to a question: treated as wrong (same penalty).
  • No answer given: No negative marking.

Civil Services Mains Exam Pattern

Qualifying Papers:

Paper-A

  • (One of the Indian Language to be selected by the candidate from the Languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution)- 300 Marks

Paper-B

  • English 3 – 300Marks

Papers to be counted for merit:

Paper-I — Essay — 250 Marks

Paper-II —

  • General Studies-I (Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society) —  250 Marks

Paper-III —

  • General Studies -II (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations –250 Marks

Paper-IV —

  • General Studies -III (Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management) — 250 Marks

Paper-V

  • General Studies -IV (Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude) — 250 Marks

Paper-VI

  • Optional Subject- Paper 1 — 250 Marks

Paper-VII

  • Optional Subject -Paper 2 —  250 Marks

Personality Test 275 Marks
